Visualizing the Silence: Design Challenges in Representing Asymmetric, Sparse Outcome Data
Jump to DiscussionAbstract
Job search applications generate data dominated by non-response, yet most tracking tools treat silence as a residual category indistinguishable from rejection. Using two personal job search datasets comprising 352 combined applications, we show that 70% received no response, all responses arrived within seven days or not at all, and referral applications produced a 5x higher response rate than cold applications. We propose two visual encodings that make silence visible and measurable, and argue that open versus closed shapes offer a lightweight, generalizable convention for distinguishing resolved outcomes from ongoing ambiguity, with implications for any domain where non-response dominates.
