Pathways Explorer allows policymakers and researchers to explore and compare various climate transition scenarios.
Abstract

In the pursuit of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, policymakers and researchers require sophisticated tools to explore and compare various climate transition scenarios. This paper introduces the Pathways Explorer, an innovative visualization tool designed to facilitate these comparisons by providing an interactive platform that allows users to select, view, and dissect multiple pathways towards sustainability. Developed in collaboration with the « Institut de l’énergie Trottier » (IET), this tool leverages a technoeconomic optimization model to project the energy transformation needed under different constraints and assumptions. We detail the design process that guided the development of the Pathways Explorer, focusing on user-centered design challenges and requirements. A case study is presented to demonstrate how the tool has been utilized by stakeholders to make informed decisions, highlighting its impact and effectiveness. The Pathways Explorer not only enhances understanding of complex climate data but also supports strategic planning by providing clear, comparative visualizations of potential future scenarios.
